Prioritizing What Matters: My 5 P's Approach to Balance in Chaotic Times
In the midst of an overflowing calendar and a never-ending to-do list, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Recently, I took a week off from podcasting and posting to recalibrate—ensuring that vital events like our biggest fundraiser and quality time with my husband on Valentine’s Day received the attention they deserve. I’d like to share my approach to prioritization, built around five key “P’s” that help me maintain balance and serve others from a place of abundance.
1. Peace
My journey begins with peace. I prioritize activities that nurture my inner calm and spiritual well-being. Whether it’s spending time in prayer, diving into Bible study, or engaging in practices that keep my body at ease—like working out and getting enough sleep—these moments of tranquility set the foundation for my day. Cultivating peace allows me to show up fully in every area of my life.
2. People
Next on my list are the people who matter most—my husband, my children, and close loved ones. I make it a point to structure my schedule so that I can consistently be present for them. Whether it’s a quick check-in or quality time spent together, ensuring that they feel loved and supported is non-negotiable. This intentional focus on relationships reinforces the bonds that keep us strong, even during the busiest times.
3. Paying Jobs
Work is a critical pillar, too. As both a CEO and a consultant, my career not only fuels my passion but also sustains my family by keeping food on the table. I prioritize my paying jobs to maintain excellence and stay ahead—ensuring that I have the capacity to perform at my best without getting overwhelmed. By safeguarding this area, I’m better equipped to fulfill my professional responsibilities and financial commitments.
4. Pleasure
In the hustle of daily life, it’s essential to carve out moments for pleasure. I dedicate time to activities that refill my emotional and mental bank account. Whether it’s a hobby, a favorite pastime, or simply unwinding with a good book, pleasure is what recharges me, making it possible to sustain my energy for the other, more demanding areas of life.
5. Philanthropy
Finally, philanthropy rounds out my approach. I believe in serving others out of the overflow of my own well-being. This includes the “freebies”—podcasting, posting inspirational content, and mentoring—endeavors that allow me to give back without compromising my priorities. By placing philanthropy last, I ensure that my contributions to others stem from a place of abundance rather than sacrifice.
The premise behind these five P’s is simple: by taking care of myself first, I’m better positioned to serve those around me. In these chaotic and unprecedented times, maintaining clear priorities isn’t just about staying organized—it’s about ensuring that you have the capacity to fight the fights that matter most. I hope my approach inspires you to review your own priorities, so you can continue to show up for the people and causes that truly enrich your life.
